It's December and I am working on my career unit with the third graders. I use the books How Santa Got His Job and How Santa Lost His Job as a part of this unit. There are some free resources that you can use with these books. Book Bite has a free activity that focuses on the reasons that Santa lost each one of his jobs and Pitner's Potpourri has a cause and effect activity HERE. You can get retelling cards for How Santa Got His Job HERE and a cause and effect activity HERE.
Purchase How Santa Got His Job HERE.
Purchase How Santa Lost His Job HERE.
I purchased both books but you can definitely do the lesson without How Santa Lost His Job. It is a cute book and has a lesson as well, however the lesson is not as career related as the first book. Make sure you read the book description before purchasing:)
COUNSELING CONNECTIONS:
This is a good resource and it lists the objectives that go along with this lesson!
Here is another resource that I found: Skills and Interests and How they Relate to the Workplace
After we read How Santa Got His Job we talk about the process for finding a job. We talk about where to look (internet, newspaper, etc...) and what type of information might be included in the advertisement. We then talk about the ways that you can apply for a job (phone, resume, etc...) We also talk about interests and the types of traits and skills that may be necessary for different types of jobs. Finally, I have each student apply to be one of Santa's Helpers. Since I can't share any of my own students displays (due to confidentiality) I am going to link you to another blog:
Aren't these cute?!
I send out a WANTED AD to all of the students asking them to apply to be an elf or a reindeer. They then fill out an application applying for the job. Here is a free application:
Or there are several other options on Teacher's Pay Teachers. All of the ones posted are free!
Elves Wanted! Working for Santa Activity (lists skills needed for each job)
